Interfarms study tour in Romania
June 20, 2008
In June 2008, SC Friesian SRL organized a study trip to Romania for Interfarms (organization of Agricultural Real Estate Companies from Europe). This organization assists farmers in their immigration process and decided to evaluate the Romanian market in search of possibilities for future investments.
The orientation tour organized by SC Friesian SRL consisted of a 4 day- trip to the southern part of Romania, with visits to various farms in Giurgiu, Ialomita, Constanta and Tulcea counties.
During the first day, a trip to Giurgiu was made, to visit Harry van den Brug (Holland Dairy farm & Dutch Dairy farm). Harry is a 27 year old farmer who, in 2006 participated in the take-over of a former state farm (Dutch Dairy farm) which has been renovated. Currently Harry is managing both farms of 460 and respectively 250 milking cows and a total land area of 780 ha.
On the second day visits were made to Tnuva dairy farm and Nedarco strawberry plant. Along with the factory, Tnuva also decided to modernize a barn of dairy cows. Both projects (dairy factory and farm) were finalized in 2007 and required a 55-million euro investment. The investment in Romania represents the first big project carried out outside Israel. At the farm level, the milk is collected from 500 cows in Adunatii Copaceni.
The Family De Waart started their business activities in Romania in 1998 by establishing a second-hand trading company. In 2005 they started in co-operation with Flevo Plant a strawberry farm in Valea Argovei. Currently Richard de Waart (32 years) owns and manages a 1 ha greenhouse strawberry facility, 24 ha outdoor growing for strawberries, cabbage and water melons as well as a cold storage warehouse.
On the way to Constanta a stop was made to visit a Dutch family who immigrated to Romania and started a new dairy farm (O lume de lapte) close to Slobozia, based on the American model. Jan Hubert Boll intends to have 2,500 milking cows. For the last 2 years he has prepared the project by purchasing the land on which the buildings will be constructed (85 ha). Furthermore he is in the process of obtaining all permits and licences, milk quota and FEADR finance.
The last two days were dedicated to arable farming. Visits were made to the field in Tulcea area, and to an arable farm and biodiesel factory, FruitVille Group.
A second study tour is scheduled to take place in September 2008.
